 1975-1977


Establishment of the Biscay Transport Consortium

The Biscay Transport Consortium has been in existence for 25 years. It is working for a quality public transport that will efficiently meet the needs of its commuters.
The Consortium plans, builds, administers, and coordinates transport resources in Biscay.
The Underground and the Creditrans ticket are milestones which hearald a bright future for public transport.

 

 

 1977-1979

First blueprint for the Undergound (or Metro) and preliminary draft alternatives.

 

 

 

 

 1985-1987


Metro Building Plan

Financial agreement between the institutions to build Line 1.

 

 

 

 1988-1990

Work on Line 1 began in Erando and downtown Bilbao.

 

 

 

 

 1992

The company Metro Bilbao, S.A. is established.

 



 

 

 1993
 
The first 24 trains are acquired.
 
 1994

Work on the superstructure of Line 1 is begun


 1995

Inauguration of Line 1 of the Metro

Coinciding with the inauguration, the 65th meeting of the International Committee of Metros of the UITP and the 9th General Assembly of ALAMYS were held




 1996-1997

Inauguration of Gobela station and the Casco Viejo-Bolueta branch.

 

 



 


 1997

Work on Line 2 begun.
In March, 1997, work was begun on Line 2 in Galindo

 



 

 1999

Adquisition of 13 new trains.

 

 

 

 

 2000
 
Contract for superstructure work on Line 2.
The CREDITRANS uniform ticket was launched.

 

 

 2002

Inauguration of 1st phase of Metro Bilbao Line 2, San Inazio-Urbinaga

Launching of BARIK smartcard pilot project.
