1976-1977
Augusto Unceta-Barrenechea
He
was the first president of the Biscay Transport Consortium after it was
set up by an enactment of law in December, 1975. Unceta-Barrenechea held
on to his post but for a year's time when he was killed in a terrorist
attack.
1977-1979
José Luis Berasategui
He
take over from Augusto Unceta-Barrenechea after his death. During his
administration, the only mayor of the Bilbao City Council who has been
the president of the Biscay Transport Consortium., he drew up the first
plan to build the underground in the capital of Biscay and its draft alternatives.
1979-1987
José
María Makua
In
the year prior to his giving up the post as president of the Transport
Consortium, José María Makua decided that the Biscay Provincial
Government should take on the financial burden that the city councils
had to take to build the underground. The provincil government came to
an agreement with the Basque Government to finance Line 1 of the underground,
50-50.
1987-1995

Alberto Pradera
During
his presiding of the Consortium, he achieved some of its most important
targets. In November, 1988, work on Line 1 began in Erandio and in March,
1990, work in Bilbao was begun. Two years later, the company Metro Bilbao
S.A. was established to go into service once the line was inaugurated.
1995-2003
Josu
Bergara
He
inaugurated the first stage of Line 1, Plentzia-Casco Viejo on November
11, 1995. Two years later, in 1997, work on Line 2 in Barakaldo was begun
and the Casco Viejo-Bolueta branch on Line 1 was opened. Moreover, the
Gobela station was inaugurated and the unified Creditrans ticket was launched
in September, 2000.
2003-2010
José Luis Bilbao
During his presidency Metro Bilbao extended its lines to the municipalities of Sestao, Portugalete , Santurtzi and Etxebarri. Deterrent car parks were built in Leioa and Etxebarri and at the BEC. The Creditrans travel pass system was extended to other operators including FEVE in June 2006 and RENFE in July 2010. July 2008 saw the setting up of the Gizatrans ticket and special fares for large families were introduced in January 2009. The first steps were also taken towards a non-contact card for public transport users in Bizkaia.
2010-2011
Antonio J. Rodríguez
During his term as chair, Metro Bilbao extended its lines to Ariz in the municipality of Basauri . The final go-ahead was given for the introduction of the Barik smart card, the transfer underground of the line at the Maidagan level crossing, the construction nearby of Ibarbengoa station and an adjacent car park and the extension of the Metro Bilbao yard at Ariz. Work continued on extending the Metro network to Kabiezes, on the opening of the Cañón de Mamariga access route and on adding a 5 th coach to Metro Bilbao trains. Negotiations began with EVE (Basque Energy Authority) with a view to fitting CTB car parks with charging points for electric vehicles. Work was also started on a study into future extensions of the Metro – Line 4 between Rekalde and Matico and Line 5 between Etxebarri and Galdakao – and into finding a location for a new yard for the Metro in the Kabiezes area.
2011-
Mikel Torres
Current Chair of Consorcio de Transportes de Bizkaia (Bizkaia Transport Consortium).
In his mandate to date the Metro has reached Basauri town centre. He has given new impetus to the work on the Urbinaga interchange station under a contract entered into by CTB and ADIF. The project to add a fifth coach to 22 Metro Bilbao trains has been completed. The first steps have been taken via an agreement reached by CTB and Urduliz Municipal Council for the transfer underground of the Metro tracks through the town. Trials have started for the introduction of the Barik card by the various transport operators. RENFE has signed an agreement with CTB to join the Barik non-contact card scheme. Studies have begun with a view to setting up a new-generation control centre at MB. Backing has also been given to the construction of park-and-ride facilities in Plentzia,
Santurtzi and Ibarbengoa.
